Obituary for John Eckle Vaughan

John Eckle Vaughan, Jr., age 84, passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 while surrounded by his family. A celebration of his life will gather 5 to 8p.m. Thursday evening January 17, at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 am Friday morning January 18. The family suggests memorial contributions to Wolcott Baptist Church or the Wyandotte County Sports Association both in care of the funeral home.
John E. Jr. was born to John E. and Aurelia Belle Vaughan on December 17, 1928 at Pineville, MO. they then moved to Doe Run, MO., where he was raised. After marring Jessie Graves together they moved to Bethel, Kansas in 1955. John worked at General American Transportation Corporation (GATX) for 25 years before retiring. He was one of five men who started the Wyandotte County Sports Association and later he was inducted into their Hall of Fame. John helped as a consultant with the building of the “Field of Dreams” in Basehor and was involved in the Ground Breaking Ceremony. He was a Cub Scout Leader for Pack #3305, Den 1 in Wolcott, KS., which was sponsored by the Wolcott Baptist Church. He was also a Scout Master for Troop # 141. John helped build the ball field for Wolcott School. He was a baseball, basketball and football coach for 30 plus years, with one State Championship. He had a lifetime membership with Piper Prairie Optimist Club. John is survived by his wife of 39 ½ years, Dorothy Vaughan of the home, two sons and one daughter, John E. Vaughan, III (Janice) of Kansas City, KS., Diana Kay Vaughan of Hammond, IN., and David G. Vaughan (Zanelle) of Bonner Springs, KS., one step-son Tom Charles (Dee Dee) of Bonner Springs, KS., two step-daughters Theresa Ward (Tommy) of Leavenworth, KS., and Jo Ellen Johnson (David) Edwardsville, KS., 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one sister June Smith (Lowell) of Farmington, MO., numerous nieces, nephews and friends. John is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 20 years Jessie, one sister Aurelia Belle Brooks, and one grandson Gregory S. Johnson. John enjoyed hunting, playing cards, and making a family garden to share with everyone. After retiring his carpenter skill helped many in his family and the community. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday Jan. 18 at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Edwardsville Cemetery, Edwardsville, KS.
